Wolsley 1500 Engine & Box swap

Post by sdcoomber »

My 1098 is tired and it is time for an upgrade. 1275 Midgets are getting rare and costly and I wondered if anyone had caried out the 1500 conversion. I looked at a 1622 a few years ago and that seemed much bigger, but the 1500 looks the same dimensions as the "A". Am I deluded or is this a sensible otion?

The 1489 is the same block as the 1622. I would imagine that you would need to do a lot of modification to the engine bay to squeeze it in. I would have thought that it was easier to find a Marina/Ital 1275 engine.

As mike p says - 1500 and 1600 are the SAME engine, and certainly not A series ! It won't go in easily (fouling on steering rack being one problem - but of course it has been done !

If a B series engine is your choice, at least go for the MGB engine and box. The others don't really give any increase in performance over a good 1275, plus they are pretty heavy.

Thanks for the advice. Am going down the 1275 Midget engine and box route instead. Would you chaps recommend changing the diff to a 3.9 or 3.7 once it is all in?

I would recommend a 3.9 diff as being a fair compromise between acceleration and relaxed cruising. Others will swear by a 3.7 diff
