That's the kind of day I'm having. The upshot is.....
1098 engine to a smooth gearbox, I know it's not 'recommended' but it will keep me going while I sort out the 948's and get one working nicely. I have both the 1098 and 948 clutch and back plate. What do I need to do to get my saloon running with a 1098? Is it swap the clutch? swap the clutch and back plate or !!!!! Grind the bell housing on the gearbox??? !!!!
I'm hoping not the last one.
Thanks in advance for the help...

What a day.......
Got the engine in.. Hereby proving that you can remove and refit an engine without disturbing the front of the car. Then came the list of small things to give me grief….
• The fact that I didn’t check the engine mount and had fitted it the wrong way up and didn’t realise until it came to fixing it in.
• The dirty rotor arm that made number 3 misfire.
• The lumpy running of the engine in low revs, still need to look into that one.
• The blowing exhaust, I hate the fixing that joins it to the manifold it keeps working loose.
BUT..!!!!!!! The engine runs, and accelerates, and runs at speed for a time and doesn’t keep flashing it’s oil light, regardless of the age and consistency of the oil AND I have a better clutch...!!!!!!!
Now I need to work on the 948 to ‘create’ one from the debris. If there is a 4810 out there looking for a new home I’d give it one
Thanks for your help….. Any idea what could cause lumpy running at low revs that completely vanishes when at speed????
Cheers…..
