Hi again all.

Well, took the filter out replaced with a short length of transparent pipe and took her for a spin.....and everything back to normal again.

I can't believe it was down to the filter which looked fine. Checked the fuel flow right at the start and everything looked fine, fuel in the filter and bowl full of fuel. Can only guess that the filter was stopping the fuel flow enough to keep cutting the engine, but when I kept getting out to check, fuel had emptied from the pump into the bowl.

All sorted now, and another lesson learned. Thanks for all of the help.

Great success! No need for a fuel filter - the pump has one built-in anyway, and the SU is very tolerant of dirt in the fuel because it has no tiny jets to get blocked up! Now refit the old faithful coil - and keep the new one as a spare, which you will never need!
