Got my van back -but just fried the wires on the traveller!

The van is looking ace -just need to get my mate to signwrite it once the paint cures a bit..............the bad news is I thought I was doing a simple repair on the traveller rear number plate lights and I had to modify one of the bulb holders and when I turned them on I dint realise the live had pushed against the back plate....the fuse holder in the engine bay on the loom has melted ! the engine starts and the idicators are working - but none of the lightswork and when I try a new fuse in the (wangled )holder - they just blow ! Im wondering am I looking at a new loom here ! ..........and are they complicated to fit ( for a novice I mean ) :(

You almost certainly wont need a new loom.

First thing is to remove the offending light unit and try again

I'm surprised that you melted the fuse holder. Normally you should have just blown the fuse, that is what they are there for. What rating fuse did you use?
Just check the wiring for any damage and if it is localised just replace the damaged section.
I burned the wiring loom on my Traveller when the coil slipped out and shorted on the engine. I definately needed a new loom. Great fun to fit first time. Easier with an alternator as the are fewer wires.

A top tip if you do get a new loom, as you remove the old one leave a short "tail" of wire on everything (that way, theres no confusion about where the wires go!)

Would seem there must have been rather more than a 'fuse' in that fuse holder! As above - disconnect the number plate lights - and get all the others working properly. Then - if you can't fix the bulb holder properly - buy a new number plate lights - they don't exactly cost a fortune.

well spotted though - if you want to see the state he was in last month thers a quick shot or two on the beggining of 'Olis 'video (Animal Jack junior ) heres the link - its more Lambretta related but you may spot some moggy bits around that old garage .....heres the link...

Sorted ! It took me all afternoon .........I put a new fuse holder in -took the old lights off ...switched on - blew the fuse (right size this time !.).........so started tracing back and back........eventually found the earth and live wires had melted together underneath all the insulation tape so I removed everything back to the last junction and replaced with new wires connectors etc...............right up to 2 NEW rear lights ........all working again now.....Phew ..........I thought it was alot worse last night when all the evil looking smoke came streaming out from underneath........................So I will make double sure Ive got the right fuse in next time ! Thanks again for all the help and advice !
