Hello Mikey,

true, but there seems little wrong with it anyway. A clean and re-assemble.

It still remains to be seen as to whether there is an earth problem rather than a starter one however.

Well, I've cleaned everything with petrol, lightly sanded the brushes and contact surface (btw I found it quite worn, 1mm gouge). Put back in the car and it started ok but with a slow crank. Then I stopped the engine and tried to start it again, but no luck.

I guess my battery may be dead. Last week I took it out and charged it. After the charge it showed 14v, but after leaving it alone 8 hours (not in the car) it was only showing 12v. What should be the standby voltage of the battery?

I'm going to recharge it again then get a new one. The one I have is a 265A/35Ah. Is that a good fit?

I've put the fully charged battery back into the car then the starter wouldn't turn. I turned the starter manually, tried again then it turned VERY slowly. The battery shows 13v. I think next step is to try to jump start it to check if it's really the battery.

Try putting the jump leads directly to one of the starter motor bolts and the starter motor live terminal - that should rule out a problem with the earthing, solenoid etc.

If it doesn't work, you're not hitting it with a big enough hammer.

Just tried that - nothing happens. It really must be the starter motor, as I just had the battery checked by Kwikfit and they said it's ok.
