1275 tuning

Post by maverick »

If i wanted to get a bit more go from a 1275 without boring what mods can i do that are fairly inexpensive?
I was thinking:
Lcb manifold?
Camshaft?
Carb?
Maybe Rockers?

But i dont know what duration cam, what type of carb, or rockers to look for. Or if these mods make a difference at all?
Thanks for the help. :)

Lcb and a 1 3/4 su will be good, you may already have that carb on there though.
I would now say that a big valve head and some porting would be one of the first things i would do. I wouldnt bother with a cam if you dont sort the head first.
So... I would do
1. Exhaust
2. Carb
3. Head
if that didn't give you the extra you want then you are looking at rebore and cam/rockers.

I'll go along with callyspot - but don't forget the alloy inlet!
Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.

The bigger valve head from the MG Metro is well worth having - look out for one on ebay - don't pay over the odds. The MG Metro camshaft is also the one to have - and as others have correctly said - exhaust and carb/alloy inlet manifold are the way to go initially. DO NOT - fit high ratio rockers - much increased wear and tear - and ~ 1 BHP extra power at the top end - with some loss at lower revs. It's the worst mod you can make to any A series!

Just bear in mind that what works well with Minis and Midgets, doesn't always work so well with the heavier Minor. Bottom end grunt is more important in the Minor.

Obviously make sure the bottom end is right. If you're looking for quite a bit more, an oil cooler (With thermostat) is good and Peter May Engineering do baffled sumps. Then I'd say work on the exhaust, induction, head and cam, more or less in that order.

The option, I'd like to explore, is the supercharged or Metro turbo route, so that you would end up with a big engine feel, without the weight penalty and fitting problems of something like an MGB engine.

Oil cooler not really required unless going for BIG power - or fitting a sump guard. I would advise to avoid the Turbo - but supercharged does seem to be the way to go. But be prepared for the supercharged fuel bills too!
