Indicators

Leaving early tomorrow morning for the National and now the indicators have stopped working!! I've checked the fuses - they look ok. Checked and cleaned the connections on the flasher unit. If it is the flasher unit I can't get one before tomorrow morning so will have to drive without them

Any other idea. Was looking at the indicator mechanism on the steering column but this doesn't seem easy to get at - I don't have any tools to get the steering wheel off which would enable me to get that black cover thingy off!!

Check all globes - the flasher requires resistance from both front and back lamps to operate. If one is out it can result in either the flasher going too fast or not working at all.

Ah ok - I take it that a globe is a bulb Just out of interest I can't see how to get the rectangular casing off the back light (traveller) I'm sure it's simple but can't see any screws holding it on. Thanks for getting back so quick

Rectangular casing - Traveller ???? All mine are circular. If ALL the indicators have failed - it's not bulbs - or globes either. Join the two main wires on the flasher unit together - do the lights now work (but obviously don't flash) ? If yes - failed flasher unit, if no - failed supply to flasher - check back to fuses/connections. Check if the BRAKE lights are still working (same fuse) - dangerous to drive without them. Otherwise - just use hand signals !

If it's not the fuse or flasher unit then check the bullet connectors from the column switch to the main wiring loom - usually under the steering column somewhere.

If it is the flasher unit and joining the wires as Roy suggests gets them on but not flashing that's better than not on at all. You could always waggle the indicator stalk to flash them manually until you get a new flasher unit at the National!

I take it that this is the flasher unit! Took off the connectors and put a screwdriver across both and still nothing. Fuses and connections look ok - break lights don't appear to be working either so maybe I should change the fuse even thought they don't appear to be broken. Two fuses in there which one is it<br><br>

Ops wrong picture. Change fuse - no difference! I'll go get under the dash <br><br>

Back from under the dash - didn't do much just moved the wires about and that fixed it. Obviously a connection to sort out. Many thanks

If the brake lights have stopped working as well then it's probably not the indicator wiring or flasher unit. Do the wipers and heater fan work? I think they all go through the one fuse so give the connectors on to the fuse box a wiggle.

btw, that flasher unit's not the right one - it needs three terminals to be able to flash the little green light on the stalk as well. That's why there's a spare light green wire dangling. Not a big deal for now though, assuming it's the correct two wires connected. I don't have a manual handy and don't know all the wire colours by heart.

I reckon you have a poor connection at the fuses, remove fuses and give the ends a clean along with the clips which retain them - could be oxidised. When fuses are back in, give them a squirt of WD40 (3 in 1 would be better) which will help them from oxidising again.

Whatever it was the problem was the wiring under the dash as Stig mentioned. Will need to have a closer look when I know exactly what I'm looking for.

Just make SURE the brake lights are working - you don't want to be rear-ended! Brake lights and flashers are from common fuse - so the problem lies in that direction.
