Eratic Speedo

Post by ani »

Speedo bears no relation to how fast I'm going. i.e. it leaps between 10 and 60mps all the time. Can anyone tell me what steps to take to try to fix it.

Thanks all

It's likely to be the cable that's the problem - winding up and then 'letting go'. If you take the speedo out (loosen two screws - then pull) - you can test it with a reverse running electric drill - if it's ok with that, then it is the cable - or much less likely - a problem with the drive gears in the gearbox.

Your first port of call should be to lubricate the speedo cable and ensure that it follows a route with as gentle curves as are feasable.
Normally it is a case of the inner cable binding somewhere on the route from the gearbox.

Had the same problem. Got a new cable from Bull Motif for about £5. At that price it seemed a bit mad to persevere with the old one. It goes into the gearbox so you need to get under the car but it's easily found and undone. You get at the cable at the speedo end by removing the cardboard inners from the glove boxes and then loosening off the speedo retaining screws on either side (there are holes for this task – good old Issigonis). Then it's a simple matter of doing up the cable at both ends. Our 13 year old replaced our one practically single-handed – which shows you how easy it is.
