As my shell is about to go for restoration, i am now looking at the mechanical bits!
I intend to replace everything to do with the brakes, is it worth spending the extra on Lockheed cylinders when the pattern cylinders are much cheaper, i will be using silicon brake fluid.
No doubt i will be posting many topics asking for help when the rebuild finally gets under way.
May as well - although I do wonder where 'genuine' Lockheed cylinders are made these days. The extra cost will be a drop-in-the-ocean compared to the overall cost of your resto! Personally - I would save the cost of the Silicon fluid!!
I used "cheapo" cylinders on mine last year, no reason to complain about them in 12000 miles! Forget silicon fluid, dot4 works fine. The silicon fluid I had experience with when someones' brake cylinder leaked, I found was almost impossible to clean off-yukky stuff!
I'd say normal brake fluid is the yucky stuff. Panic stations if it gets spilled on a painted surface to remove it before it takes the paint off.
Silicone fluid you can wipe off at your leisure with a cloth. And it isn't hygroscopic so wont cause your new brake parts to rust from the inside.
thanks all, when its back on the road, it will only do a thousand or so a year as i have a Alfa MiTo for 'normal' use, i am worried about the build up of moisture in the system, hence the silicon fluid
