Because they have return springs! Disc pads = no return springs. the 'pressure hold' on drum brakes just takes up the slack - it's effectively a 'self adjust' mechanism. But it leaks off during a long stop - so the first stroke of the brake pedal after a long stop can often be quite 'long'!

Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.
I had the misfortune to have to avoid a truck and trailer who must have decided that I wasn't really there. I was doing 100 kph, on a dry road, and found out that the brakes will lock up at that speed. All this with 8" drums. I just would not want to try it again too soon after.

Definitely - the Wolsley 1300 had the same absolutely useless disc brakes as the rest of the 1100/1300 range of cars! The front wheel bearings were very weak (penny pinching ball bearings when should have been taper rollers) - and the calipers seized up in no time. Mind you - the pads are the same ones used in my TR7!
