Doubtful Lou. I tried to get the local police to record it as such. They insisted they couldn't as they weren't able to 'put it in their lost property section as it was a bit too big'. This was from a PCSO though

I don't think there is a statute of limitations type thing on this. This is new and uncharted territory now

By supplying you with the previous owner's details are DVLA suggesting that you contact them as to where their car is? It does seem a bit "hit and miss" to me.

Don't the DVLA have to contact the previous RK before they chuck a V5C at me?

I'm sorry if I've thrown a spanner in the works, but I'd hate you to spend money and get the car into a good condition only for someone to come along and claim it.

No, no Lou you haven't at all!!! You've been great actually.

I guess I have been trying to put off the inevitable really. I have to write to the RK and sort it properly, no two ways about it.

Any ideas what the car is worth in it's current state. Bearing in mind the following:

It needs work underneath, in at least 3 or maybe 4 places corrosion has hit. Nothing major mind. Interior is tidy. Drivers seat has a tear, and the carpets may be rescuable apart from one sill and both footwell sections. The car moves backwards and forwards, but the brakes will for safety sake need an overhaul. I think either the water pump bearings are grumbling, and/or the timing chain will need doing. Boot lock u/s, rear brake light u/s. Paintwork is as flat as a pancake. Minor (groan) repairs here and there, especially the bootlid. Respray would be beneficial. Obviously no mot. Chrome is tatty but I have seen worse. Mileage is just under 94000 miles. gear lever floppy'ish, probably a bush or?

Cost me so far: about £35 in bits.

If it were me I'd write to the RK and say I'd rescued the vehicle from being scrapped/towed away and had it safely off road, and that I was offering to take it off his hands and save him from being fined. See what the answer is. If you do get a reply offer them £100 (cheaper than the fine!)

OK here is my angle on it - The car is worthless (at least to the previous owner - that's why they dumped it after all!!!) Additionally, the registered keeper is not the legal owner of the vehicle.... so, write to the previous owner (as above) but, say that you have rescued the vehicle and due to the costs of storage (make your own amount up) they can pay up or sign the car over to you (do it in a plite manner but without a begging feel to it). I would bet they would be happy to pass legal ownership to you rather than pay your storage fees then you have legal title to the vehicle - Simples

When I aquired a car under similar circumstances, as soon as I got the V5, the car was insured, moted and taxed with no problem. DVLA should have already contacted the previous RK, requesting permission to release the V5. The PRK either said yes or were not interested.
Youi have the car, complete with V5.

Ok. Mind rested. The resto will commence. I will keep a detailed log of all the work carried out and shall post here. Will also join the Club at the end of the month (on payday).

Hi again. Just wanted peoples opinions on the colour of the Moggie. Is it Trafalger Blue or ........? I know the paint is very faded. Is there a colour code located on the VIN plate? Cheers. Ken

Yes - trafalgar blue. Paint code BU37 although there are two slightly different shades.

The shade you want is BU37 Trafalgar blue 1969 - there is one 1971 BU 37 but this was used for the Morris 1100 and is slightly lighter.
