Has anyone electrolytically de rusted leaf springs?

Post by damian1978 »

Hello all, I have recently made myself an electrolysis tank from an old dustbin and I'm wondering if anyone has de rusted leaf springs in this manner?

I know there is potential for hydrogen embrittlement with electrolysis, so I wonered if leaf springs would be affected.

Any advice welcome!

Thanks
Damian

I wouldnt use electrolytic cleaning for springs - as you say can lead to embrittlement . The same problem when springs are electroplated.

The problem can be overcome I believe but not with home made kit

Just wire brush them - never heard of a spring rusting away - they fail due to wear and tear long before rust gets to them in any serious way!

Wire brush, zinc prime.....hammerite then grease up. Job done!
Ultimate rust cure for your moggy....paint it brown, at least that way you dont notice the rust as much!!
