A reg 1955 car?

Hiya!

Does anyone know why a 1955 car might have an A registered plate on it? I thought they started using letters in 1963?

This is very common. If the original plate was sold the car will be given a replacement plate, there were lots of A-reg plates left over as they were not issued for as long as the others so these will be given as replacements for older cars, whatever the year is.
Mine has an age-related plate as the original was sold, luckily mine is a '63 anyway so it's not as noticeable.

Oh I see thanks very much. It seems weird though a 1955 car with a 1963 plate.

These days DVLA issue age related plates without the year suffix, usually left over Scottish plates as they didn't exhaust their allocation when the age suffix letters started. I think you can apply for a new plate if you are not happy with yours. There is a section on reg. plates on the Series MM website under Vehicle Identification
