Van front suspension kingpins

Post by don58van »

LCV experts

I have seen mention on some UK websites that van (and pickup?) kingpins are different from saloon kingpins.

I know that the 8cwt steering arms are different, but are there other differences in the LCV kingpin?

Can anyone confirm refute the notion that there are differences (other than the special case I noted above)?

If so, what are the differences?

Our local experts say that our Aussie LCVs had the same front suspension as the sedans (the proper name for 'saloons' :P )

Cheers

Only difference is the ability to take the larger steering arm. So ordinary kingpins can be used (if you can find any) as long as you use the normal steering arm on them !
Why the larger steering arms were deemed necessary remains a mystery! I know of NO cases of normal arms breaking or bending - and the additional load carrying capacity was over the rear axle anyway - hardly affecting the front end at all!

I think it was a gpo/post office thing, for strengthening, but I've always thought the larger hole required for the steering arm defeated the object.

Maybe the GPO/PO lads were always banging up and down curbs - and bent the steering arms !

the bigger steering arms were only put on the 8cwt version
6 cwt versions had the smaller steering arms

nothing to do with post office or gpo unless they used the 8 cwt version :D :D
