Head Re-Torque

Post by d_harris »

Having recently replaced the head gasket (twice, but thats another story  ) I'm wondering how long it needs to be left until re-torquing and what torque it should be set to?

Bearing in mind I have a metric wrench.....

I retorque after the engine has been started and run up to temperature. I go to 45 ft lbf for a 'normal' engine (50 for a high perf engine), no idea what a Newton is ! Something to do with apples I believe ?

On the s/v engine I torque it down cold, 10lbs ft at a time, torque it down hot. Take it for a run and check again as well as checking for oil and water leaks and then check again until there is no movement. A bit excessive maybe but it only takes 2 mins to run around the 13 studs
