carb dilemma

Post by rob.hardy1 »

The fuel consumption of my traveller is very poor and i have not been too worried about it but i think its time to do something about it . I have been told by a mechanic that the the carb is err....waht did he say......? can't quite remember the expletive he used, suffice to say he said was adjusted as far as it would go.
My question is, do they wear out requiring replacement or can i revitalise the one i have with a refurbishment kit.
New carb approx £120,,,,,kit about £25

You need to check the carb casting for the butterfly valve and spindle. If no wear in this area then a new needle and jet along with a clean and set up should fix you up. It would still be cheaper to get hold of a secondhand carb and refurb that rather than buying new..

Take the chance to upgrade to a bigger/better carb! HIF 38 from ebay on an MG Metro inlet manifold is much better. If your car is heavy fuel consumption - what colour are the plugs ? The carbs are infinitely adjustable - so don't worry about tales of woe. Yes the butterfly spindle can be a bit worn - but that would only affect idle - not running or fuel consumption. The jet and needle could be worn - but the plug colour will tell all! Don't expect miracle fuel consumption from thes cars - if you get 30/35 overall you are doing quite well! Long runs with careful driving (but where's the fun in that?!) can do rather better - but traffic and cold starts all take their toll.
