what do you guys think of a supercharged morry?

Post by morrisman1 »

theres a half finished morry sitting in the shed here waiting for some work on it. its already got disc brakes and datsun rear axle. my plans for the engine were originally to drop in a datsun a12. i thought the other day... i can better that.

ive also got a datsun a15 engine here out of a vanette. sc12/14 superchargers are dime-a-dozen on the internet here in NZ as they come off toyota levins which are pretty common vehicles here.

so the plan was a datsun a15 engine, extractors, custom camshaft grind (coming out of a blown motor which was also supercharged), general rebuild with new valvesprings and that sorta stuff but it doesnt need a rebore, toyota sc12/14 supercharger on a suck through system. boost will be about 7-8psi as any higher than that you start to need an intercooler and that means a blow through system which is complicated. that boost level also means i dont need to decompress the engine.

in a 700kg morry minor 4-door. it should pump out about 120hp and go like stink!

Well I know of an early car with Alta Head & Supercharger but not of a later combo like you are suggesting.

For about 5 minutes until the pistons melt! I would tone down the s/charger pressure to about 4 psi max if you want the engine to survive. Otherwise - sounds good, and good luck with it!

But the motor was already a supercharged one so should be okay so long as its kept under 10psi. I'd keep the cam mild though

brill idea, personally.

mine loves it at 10 psi on an a series.

I thought this was meant to be a clean forum with no smut or bad language and then jonathon goes and gets all pornographic!

God I like the idea, but it must be a handfull.

And oh my good god I would not want to be picking up the tab.

But oh yes that does sound awfully naughty but nice.

Thing is though there must come a point in the keep getting more powerfull where it just ceases to be nice to drive and just becomes excitingly difficult and completely dangerous.

I had a dolly sprint with 170bhp and with that short a wheelbase it was a complete handfull. Surely 300bhp in a moggy short wheelbase must just go sideways everytime you open the tap. great fun for a few minutes but probably no more.

But ooooooh it does sound like fun.

Well its designed to be a track day car, no frills but a stack of useable power. The motor is fortunately being supplied by OMEX electronics and will be a test bed for both companies. It will feature ABS, traction, control and launch control, with a few other nifty electronic bits that will hopefully filter down to our road cars.
The owner of Omex runs a 170bhp traveller as a daily driver, and found the power to be a little lacking on the track. A 200bhp version is on the cards, followed later by the supercharged motor courtesy of a few special parts and a Rotrex supercharger.this will start at about 260bhp and be tweeked upto its max of 360bhp

Some people don't know when they are well off :D
As for launch control :o that could be interesting.

Is that the Traveller and owner that was at the national? If so, I said the power hunger would kick in. A couple of weeks at any horsepower and the curiosity starts to mount :) Especially if being goaded by the rest of Omex

It certainly is Darren. I think that Omex have a quite healthy competitive rivalry. :D
