I think the lads in triumph were clever, I did not measure the boxes exactly but they look very simular lengths in my photos.

The overdrive unit bolts directly on to the main gearbox case which means you have a very short output shaft in the triumph box compared to the longer marina output shaft, hence the reason for swapping gears over between the two boxes.

Don't see why that's any reason to swop gears about ??

The triumph bellhousing on the gearbox I used would have only fitted on to the ital engine if I changed the ital back plate.

Owen Burton states “the 1st motion (input) shafts all vary considerably in lengths and spline types; so making it impossible to make a match to the marina clutch/flywheel”

If you do not believe him or have found a triumph gearbox with the same length and spline types on the first motion shaft it is a simple case of swapping the ital bellhousing on to the dolomite box and off you go as the gearbox casings are the same.

If you do believe him ,you have no choice other than to use the first motion from the marina. You can not use the output shaft from the marina as it is too long to fit into the overdrive unit of the triumph box so you have to use the output shaft of the triumph. I admit I did not try to marry up the first motion shaft gears of the marina with the final gears on the output shaft of the dolomite but it might be an interesting experiment.

So to maintain a standard set of gear ratios throughout the box you would either need to put the first motion shaft gears from the triumph on to the marina first motion shaft or put the output shaft gears from the marina on to the triumph output shaft.

He also states as I suspected from my photos that the overall length of the ital box with overdrive is the same length as the standard Ital box.
