Wiper Motor Wiring Advice

Post by mof »

I know that the three wires into the wiper box are

Green and black = to earth via the switch on the dash
Green = from fuse
Black = earth

Inside the wiper box there is a copper probe which contacts a brass segment and makes a circuit and the wipers work.

My question is - When the probe touches the brass segment as it rotates, what wires are being connected in the trio to make the wipers work?

Thanks in advance

The power is on all the time - the brass contact completes the circuit to earth - as does the dash switch. So when that switch is put OFF, the motor still finds earth through the contact - until it rotates to the 'dead' section - and stops!

So.....if the probe inside the wiper box was missing, then the wipers would run if you shorted the brass segment to earth? Is that correct?

Having recently replaced my wiper motor assembly I am chasing my tail trying to get them to park in the correct spot!

I know the principle, which is rotating the cap on the top of the box, but I seem to go round in circles!

Is there a sequence I could try for most efficient result?

Just rotate the cap a little at a time and the wipers will either park nearer or further from the bottom of the screen, so correct the direction of turn if necessary.

If you dampen the screen when you are doing the adjustment you will get a better result as there is a LOT more drag on a dry screen.

I would do it without wiper arms fitted at first - just put a chalk mark on the spindles. Then when it's nearly right - fit the arms and fine tune it.
