clutch linkage

Post by emmerson »

This is a memory test! My mate used to have a minor many many years ago which he insists had a chain in the clutch linkage. Now, I've worked on/owned Minors since 1958, and I don't remember ever seeing anything different to what I've got now, but he is absolutely adamant that there was a short chain in there. Anyone else remember this?

The post-war Morris Minor never had a chain. Even the very early sidevalve cars had a rod linkage.

The next earlier car which had a chain was a Morris 8 Series E. It is of course possible that a Series E gearbox was transplanted into a sidevalve Minor and the linkage modified.

Cam, I think you've cracked it - prior to the Minor, he had an E, and his old memory is playing tricks!!

I like the idea of a chain in the clutch linkage.
As a get you home bodge I used a couple of cable ties to replace a broken rod and the clutch action was much improved.
A piece of chain should give the same flexibility and you could put a plastic tube over it and fill it with grease to protect most of of it from the elements.
If you used a small shackle at the front and a bit of the old rod with thread and nut at the back (with a hook bent in it to attach the chain) you should get the best of all worlds :)
