Bullet connector size?

Hi,

I'm fitting a circuit to give Rosie hazard lights, I've finally cobbled together most of the pieces I need but need to get some male and female bullet connectors to link the componants into her wiring loom. However there are two sizes available, 4mm and 5mm! Any idea?

I'd have thought 4mm would be fine? Use the same as is already on the car if I were you, 4mm sounds right to me!

I just bought a box of assorted crimp connectors and used what I needed. The others will always find a use.
I have just fitted the hazard light kit in the traveller that I bought at the NEC. I have already fitted electric washers by using a light switch for the wash / wipe which gave me a spare hole where the washer was and the flasher switch fits neatly in there.
The instructions for the kit were OK until they said "cut the wire from the ignition switch to the flasher unit", which forgot to mention that that wire went via the fuse box. I sorted it out by pulling the connector off the flasher unit and connecting one wire from the connector to the hazard switch and the other wire from the flasher to the hazard switch. Surprise, surprise, it all worked first time

I'm taking a feed from the courtesy light circuit as there is a spare socket in one of the double female bullet connectors (and obviously is permentantly live) through a second flasher unit to a switch and dashboard telltale through 2 diodes into the indicator circuits where again there are spare sockets in the double female bullets.
It's taken me a while to find the diodes (should have looked on e-bay from the start) but it worked without them unless I tried indicating so I disconnected it while I searched for the diodes.
I thought I'd do it this way as then I'm not making any permenant alterations and it's all period technology.

Hello Philip,

there are different sizes in the same standard, i.e the 4mm will be available to suit different wire diameters. If you are using insulated crimp types their insulation colours will be red, blue or yellow I would think. Broadly, red is 1.5mm sq, blue 2.5mm sq and yellow 4mm sq.

Just to clarify, the bullet size on old british cars tends to be 5/16" or 4.8mm. I would imagine a 5mm bullet would fit an existing female as it should be able to stretch 0.2mm. The 4mm bullet size is, I think, what you come up against mainly on Japanese/ European/ not British motorcycles. I have had these in selection boxes as "standard" but they waggle around loose in a moggy system!

The blocked oil filter warning light in the speedo never does anything, especially if you have a canister oil filter, so you could disconnect it and use it for the hazards warning light. I've used it for the trailer indicator warning light.

They are 4.8mm, but the imperial equivalent is 3/16"! The whole range of bullets, connectors etc. is readily available from auto electric suppliers or someone like Vehicle Wiring Products, who will supply mail order over the web. Their website is:

If you go to 'Terminals', 'Non-Insulated' and 'Bullets & Sockets' you find anything that you need. Used them a number of times and have been very satisfied each time.
