Could be a poor earth to the engine
Only this week I have had the same problem on a Citroen
Try connecting a jump lead between the engine and the battery earth

poor earth betwen gearbox and crossmember, poor eath connection to bulkhead, poor connections at the solenoid, poor connection at the starter motor or weak starter motor.

Using a jump lead to bridge various parts of the circuit should highlight the issue.

And finally - the battery may be on its very last legs! An old one is are usually ok after a long charge but then weak the day after.

Thats because the car is trying to use them as an earth return because you don't have a proper one... As above you need to find and replace your bad earth...

Definitely new earth leads needed - and very probably you will now need new accelerator and choke cables - they will have at least partially 'welded' internally.

No need to replace the horrible earth wire under the gearbox.

Put a nice new one where you can see it from one of the front engine mount tower bolts to the mechanical petrol pump cover or somewhere else directly from the chassis to the engine block.
