Painting a worn steering wheel

Post by M_Temple »

I'm sure I saw a thread on someone who did a marvellous job repairing and repainting a steering wheel - but can I find it ........

So ... anyone any advice/good experience on what is the best paint/finish to use to get that shiny, deep black glossy finish? Mine is in good condition, but its so worn it's almost grey.

Thanks

If it woz still about then good old fashioned 2K would give you a lovelly deep shine. Failing that 4-5 coats of gloss black from a can and take it to a body shop 4 a few coats of clear.

Hardly worth the effort, and it would never look right. I bought a near perfect one at a boot sale for 50p. When a car goes for scrap one of the things that is nearly always kept is the steering wheel

People ask silly money for Series MM steering wheels in anything like good condition so they are worth hanging on to.

I suspect gloss paint - even with clear coat - would become 'sticky' in warm weather!

Surely Luxobarge has done the steering wheel and will know what to do? He's covered every other part of the interior in great detail!

2K is still available in my area, OK if you have the respirators etc. As BMC says, pretty much anything else will go tacky- the oils in your skin do horrible things to paint finishes over time. If you used an epoxy based paint (or epoxy lacquer over normal paint) then that should be pretty impervious. Some of the chassis black products are epoxy based....

2K still available here as well, might give it a try as I will need to order some gloss black for my MGF

Ok I may be and probably being silly here so just tell me if I am but could you not get hold of some of the spray paint that professionals use and bake it in your home oven? That way you would get a super hard professional finish every time?
