Jacking point

Post by Sidney'61 »

Where should I jack the car up from when working on the rear suspension?
I usually use the diff casing but it might be a bit difficult if I'm taking the suspension apart! Also there aren't any jacking points on the side of mine either (not that they'd be much use anyway :-? )

Thanks

Use a length of timber between the rear bumper irons and jack in the middle of that....?

Are you sure they're strong enough? after all they're just fastened in with 3 bolts.

Jack the car up under the centre of the rear spring then place an axle stand under the front spring mounting and remove the jack. This should give you room to remove the rear spring if necessary. NEVER work under a car supported on jacks.

The "real" question is.... are your rear inner wings strong enough :-) Yes, I do jack mine under the rear bumper... and I can lift it manually by pulling up the rear bumper.... not much weight at the rear end :-)

That's exactly my worry, I'm remembering the fact that I bolted the bumper irons in! :)
I might stick with the spring mount idea.

Thanks guys for the quick responses

If you need the complete rear suspension off - then yes - you will have to jack it up just forward of the rear springs - and -as above - a good thick plank across the car (check it clears the prop shaft) should make it stable enough.
