Closure (sort of) to gearbox jumping out of reverse

Post by MattRuch »

On a previous topic, I mentioned the gearbox in my 69 Morris saloon 1098/4-speed was jumping out of reverse and I was having to hold the gearbox lever when I was reversing..

I was guided towards obtaining some parts to try, rather than pulling the gearbox.

I ordered the gear lever, new gaiter, the anti-rattle kit (containing the spring, plunger for underneath the gear lever, and the brass plug and washer) and two-u-joints (unrelated to this issue) for 44 quid-including carriage from DSN Classics in Attleborough.

I replaced the bits today.

The gearbox will still jump out of reverse, but now only at the beginning of backing up whilst I'm letting out the clutch. I could not make it jump out once I was moving and had my hand off the gearbox lever. Simply holding the lever until I have started to move backwards seems to work...I think I can live with that.

Thanks for the advice.

I'm off in the monsoon to head to Oxburgh hall to meet up with an MG group out on a tour of the countryside today.

Again, thank you

Good to hear DSN are still around. They certainly used to do good deals on Mini parts. It sounds as if the reverse gear is not fully engaging - and then when you move it does fully engage. But - if you can live with it as is, that's certainly easier than pulling the box! Hope you have your ignition well water-proofed for the flooding!
