Modified exhaust hangers

I have a large bore system and it is hanging on with two solid mountings. There is a fair bit of vibration coming through and I was devising a way to reduce this. i'd like to get hold of a coupe of elastomers about the same size as the tie bar bushes but a lot softer than the rubber items.

Any ideas?

Older Minis used a rubber mounting with studs, described as a "cotton reel" in many workshops. Should still be readily available and made for the job

Aye - but these cotton reels are not very strong - and are better used where they are in compression - rather than in tension. Certainly don't hand the exhaust 'solidly' or it will just crack - it has to move with the engine. Can you not just hang it as the original - with short rubber/ webbing straps and clamps ?

The plan is to modify a U clamp so there is a threaded rod rising vertically from the exhaust passing through the boot floor of the car. Above and below the floor will be elastomers.

might be worth phoneing someone who makes poly urathane buses and see if they have any softer ones for that.
If not I think that some old renaults has the exaust hung on a series of rubber rings (think of a big, soft O ring)
otherwise another to use would be off a corsa (97 vintage)
either of these could be hung on a pair of "hooks" one bolted to the underside of the floor. The other could simply be a piece of flat steel with 2 holes in it, placed under the nuts on the U clamp.

The cars with exhausts hung on rubber rings usually have lots of these rings all the way along the system. Threaded rod will not be much better than your solid system - you really need some 'isolation' in the hangers.

Go to any motor factors and ask to have a look through their selection of mounting rubbers and see what will be the best fit

That was indeed my first idea. Polo and Golf had this arrangement - of which I am very familiar having changed a few systems in my time. Unfortunately these rings are not too strong and certainly struggle to cope with the additional weight of a stainless exhaust as they have a habit of hopping off or snapping the rubber. I've been there too when I had a Sebring system on my Polo.

I've used a piece of a serpentine alt belt from a modern car before to hang the exhaust from. they wont break

One way of lessening this is to ues a tip tie so the rubber has to come over this, obviously rewelding the hanger is best. What polo did you have?
