Its kind of a off and on thing, most of the time its ok. But sometimes it starts randomly. It doesnt affect the car or how it drives, but it doesnt sound healthy.

Gearbox Whining
My 4 speed gearbox seems to be making a whining sound (Louder than usual) in gears 1, 2 and 3.
Its kind of a off and on thing, most of the time its ok. But sometimes it starts randomly. It doesnt affect the car or how it drives, but it doesnt sound healthy.
If anyone could help me out with this it'd be great!

First check - is there any oil in there! Refill with engine oil if low. If still whining in 1/2/3 that indicates wear and tear on the layshaft and it's bearings, allowing the laygear to run slightly out-of-mesh with the main shafts. An immediate strip down and rebuild with new layshaft/bearings and maybe a new laygear would keep it going, but at some considearble cost. Maybe better to just chase up a low cost secondhand gearbox.
