Morris Minor in (old) Advertising!

Just saw this today and didn't know if anyone else has seen it.

There's a moggy (albeit the rear of it) in an advertisement for "PHILIPS MotoRadio" it says "1955! You'll remember it as the year motoring became much more enjoyable: the year PHILIPS MotoRadio came back - better than ever!"

Just thought it was quite nice to see that they thought of associating that with a background photograph of a morris minor going up a road in the countryside.

Yes that would help if I posted an image wouldn't it? I'll see what I can do I don't want to damage the book (The Motor Electrical Manual) I got it out of however.

Ah thats better! 22gns, sounds like a lot of money in 1956, I wonder if the Morris is still around?

Indeed. I only picked up the book on wednesday from an Antique shop and have been leafing through it ever since. Even has an advert on the back for "Lodge" spark plugs. I've never even heard of that brand!

But the best is still that advert I think, with it implying a moggy has an expensive radio that they're listening to while on a nice country drive.

Their old Factory still exisits in Olney, Bucks but is now a block of flats.

Wow! I find all this kind of thing quite fascinating. Theirs a windmill where I live now an empty tower but I've seen pictures of it in it's heyday with sails and a metal "HOVIS" sign on it, looked completely different.

There's only a few adverts in the book I bought last week sadly, the phillips one, lodge spark plug ones, Long Life Lithanode car batteries and another for Park car batteries.

I suppose, and hope, you mean the book/advert smell? My 1945 "Automobile Electrical Maintenance" book (conforming to the binding economy standard) has a musty smell as though its been in an OAPs dressing table for years. Fascinating reading though for 50p at my favourite transport museum;eg I hadn't realised the old dip beam system was solenoid operated-tilting the lamp up and down. (Oh and the back cover "Lodge" advert states they were in Rugby at that time.)

Just like any of these things they always smell a bit musty. Even the whole load of Morris Advertising bumpf I have is a bit musty smelling. Like the 1958 price list for a moggy thousand stating they cost £625 and 7 shillings for 1000 2 door saloon (the cheapest of the morris 1000 range). Double that and you could get an uprated MGA (not that I really fancy one or afford one ).
