How long does it take for Dum Dum to 'set'

Post by MGFmad »

Just finished fitting the aluminum side panels to the new wood frame and I used the Dum Dum sealant. I know this doesn't actually set, I think the tin mentions the surface forming a film. Anyone know how long this takes?

Attached is a photo of the panels which have been painted along with the B pillars, the rest still has the very faded old paint!

Dum dum does not set. You might find that it will ooze out of the joint between wood and panel just with a change in temperature. Normally only the exposed area of the joint will semi dry, but hand heat will revitalise it. I fitted a set of timber to my demo traveller around 12 years ago, the car has never been out or used as its still under construction and the Dum dum still pushes its way out during hot spells.
The idea of Dum dum is that it seals by staying flexible and has the advantage of easy removal over the use of a silicon sealer.

Yes I agree as above. I replaced the window channels on my Landrover about 4 years ago. The fixed part of the glass is sealed with Dum Dum and its still not gone hard. I just keep knifing it off to stay flush then it skins over in about a week or so but hot weather will make it bulge out agian.... Never seems to shrink back in the cold though so maybe I put too much in ???
