Broke down on the way home!

Post by RogerRust »

It wasn't a very good start to the ownership of my MGB GT. it started off fine but started to misfire a bit. When we were nearly home I pulled into a lay-by to let Bev go home, (she had been following me back from collecting the car). The misfire was easy, one of the dampers was loose on the dash-pot. BUT as I watched Bev drive off I turned the key and nothing just a feeble click.

I did all the normal checks and could see no problem. There was a loose wire that appeared to have come off the fuse box and so I popped it back on and it fired up fine, but wouldn't stop until I took the wire off!

Oh well, that got me home to my multimeter. The problem is the fuse box is shot there is almost no continuity between the lucar connectors and the fuse. It seems to have corroded up internally. Easy fix to fix I will get a new fuse box today.

I have just been through the paperwork that came with the car. For the last 6 years there is less than 1000 miles in total between the MOTs and some years it only did 20 miles a year.

The previous owner enclosed the receipts for work he did in 2001 - rebuilt the front suspension and brakes. Then he never used it - strange.

It has been waxoyled there are loads of holes and plugs in the obvious places and the body work is in a very nice condition, just needs a good wash and polish.

So I am going to do oil and filters and put some fresh petrol in. I took the pertronix electronic ignition off the minor and so that's going on later!

Then new air filters and a trip to the rolling road should see it sorted.

I love doing interiors and so its getting new leather and carpets, a Moto-Lita steering wheel. and a serious attack with Mr Sheen.

Photos to follow.

I hope the breakdown wasn't during one of the downpours. I drove through a couple on the way home yesterday in the Sprite which was fun, still, it was warm enough that my hair had dried out by the time I got home even though the carpets were still a bit soggy!

Sounds like a generally sound car though, a corroded fusebox is easier to replace than a corroded sill etc.
