spin on oil filter

Post by polo2k »

Hi all,
went to halfrauds at the weekend and picked up an oil filter from a mini (they only had .850 , 1L and 1.4 listed. The filter I got (1L version) there is a single rubber ring on the top, im not sure but i thought that the one I took off had 2 concentric rubber rings on the mating surface.

Are that paint funes getting to me or is one of them wrong?

p.s. cant lay my hands on the old one easily at the moment.,

I've got a few spare oil filters from a job lot I got at Beaulieu last year. I seem to recall the Metro Turbo one (same basic fitting as the normal Mini/ Metro, but longer body) is also listed to fit 1.8 Passats. Might be worth looking into some time as bigger body should equal more filter inside which is no bad thing :)

As for rubber seal, one is the norm IIRC.

one sealing ring is normal, if there was two, probably something like the last filter change left the ring on the block so you ended up with two at this filter change?

Problem with spin-on filter can be cheapo filters have no non-return valve, and so when mounted high up/upside down (like A+ Marina/Ital) the oil can drain away when standing. Not a problem if fitted in place of the original filter - with spin filter hanging down, no chance of draining.

1.8 passats?... could you please see if there is a reference to year/engine code etc or even better a part number. Ill be willing to look at this on my rebuilt engine as ill need to change the filter after a few weeks anyway

Coolio. I "think" ive found the one but ill do some more checking.
Another benefit of the genuine VAG ones is that they are black and I HATE the white filters pokeing out from the bottom of the engine bay.
Just for confirmation (coundlt find reversed listings for framm) does anyone know a year and engine for the passat this comes from?

According to my Fram book it's the 1.8 petrol and diesel (non-turbo) 98-05 models.

Its not just the physical dimensions and mounting thread that have to be considered when a replacement filter is chosen. There are many internal factors to consider as well (flow rate and grade of filter material etc). You don't think the manufactures make thousands of different filters for fun now do you?

You don't think that all the pattern (and let's face it, OE) filters use bespoke internals for each and every model they are listed for surely?

Non return valves may or may not be fitted depending on application, but filter medium is almost certainly going to be standard across a manufacturers range, with the differnce being amount of it possible to be shoved in the container.

Thinking about it for a moment - If the Metro Turbo (same thread/ diameter) filter is longer than the NA Metro one, and is also suitable for a modern VW with a much larger more powerful engine, does that suggest Austin Morris/ BL fitted a larger filter for fun on the turbo, or that the same basic filtration was used just more of it?

Now, if you want to argue that pattern filters are "variable" in quality between makes I totally agree, but different applications listed for filters from the same company? Other than fundamental differences such as the valves I really can't see there's going to be the slightest difference in anything other than size.
