Abigail For Sale - please note

Post by theminorsite »

Presuming the moderators of the board will permit, I'd like to pass on the content of a letter I've penned today to branch secretaries of MMOC local branches. Unfortunately I am under advice not to enter into any discussion on the letter, save to clarify the pertinent facts.
kind regards,
Mike

Dear branch secretary,
I would be extremely grateful if you could pass the content of this letter on to your members on my behalf. Should you have any information to pass on, you can reach me through my branch website at www.TheMinorSite.co.uk, where a copy of this letter will be displayed so that your members may be fully appraised.

It has recently come to my attention that my old car Abigail is currently being offered for sale, for around £3700, by a person who purchased the vehicle very recently from me. Because the seller unfortunately has the same Christian name as I do, and lives in the same town, I fear there is a distinct possibility that any prospective purchasers may mistakenly believe it is being sold by myself, and so attach undue credit to any description that may be given. I have had a series of conversations with a MMOC branch member who had been about to purchase the car, and as a result of those conversations believe that the car is in exactly the same condition as when I sold it to the current seller, for £1500, some two weeks ago. As I have owned this car for fifteen years, and am a relatively well-known member through my various exploits within the club, it is inevitable that many branches recognise Abigail and her number plate and associate the car with me. It is important, then, that I point out to any person considering buying the car that it is NOT being sold by its long-term owner, and that they should satisfy themselves properly with its condition versus the price being asked for it, rather than assume that simply because its 'my' car that it will have been properly described and represents an appropriate value.

The price I accepted reflected the remedial works that I feel are required, works that to a person well acquainted with Minors would be self-evident, but that to a novice may not be noticed. Unfortunately the person who alerted me that she is being offered for sale is by his own admission not au fait with Minors, and he did not see the required work. (Please note that I am obviously not privy to conversations between the seller and prospective buyer and so have no idea of what information about the car was passed on - that is a matter between the two of them. I am, however, led to believe that the buyer is now considering not going through with the purchase.) When he showed the photographs he had been sent to a fellow member, they immediately recognised it as Abigail and told the prospective buyer that it would be a good purchase, since he thought it still belonged to me and I am unlikely to risk my name by misrepresenting a car. Fortunately, he then got in touch with me via the Lincs website. I was obviously shocked at the price he stated it was being offered for, and gave him my opinion that Abigail was not worth that amount of money. To protect myself legally here, I should also point out that despite my long-standing association with Minors and the club in general, I am not a trained motor vehicle technician and it is only my opinion that Abigail has a certain 'value', not a fact. It is possible that the price being asked for the car now is an accurate and representative one, but that would mean that I under-estimated its value by over two thousand pounds, which I think is rather unlikely. Because I am not a professional inspector of Morris Minor's, I will not go into detail here on what I think needs to be done to this particular car, save to say that the price I sold the car for represented to my mind a fair deal for both buyer and seller, and that I considered the car required a considerable investment of labour and panels before she could fairly be described as a £4,000 car.

I hope that at least one person within your branch will recognise my name, either by virtue of my various charity 'head shaves' or with Winston the raffle/challenge car which raised over £13,000 for charity, or through my exploits with local friends in winning and losing various Interbranch Challenges, or even the horribly-embellished and usually beer-fuelled stories that go round Minor campsites about Minor's On Tour trips. I trust then that you will appreciate that I am writing only to safeguard that hard-earned infamy, and to ensure that none of your members mistakenly believe they are dealing with me.

Kind regards,
+++++++++
Mike

Presuming the moderators of the board will permit,
I dont think there are any issues with your posting Mike as you are just stating some facts to avoid any confusion about a car that you used to own.
And as I am aware of the confusion I can understand your reasons for your posting.
Cheers

Kevin
