new to forum-here in California-gas tank info for '61 pickup

Post by mrsnak »

Just picked up a sweet '61, but has been modified.

(purists read no further)
Engine and trannie are a '74 Datsun B210.
Gas tank is a curiousity. Thought it was from a '68-'75 VW Bus, but not.

Fits well in gas tank cavity- roughly 14"x11"x36"
Can't match this up to anything readily available and this requires too much rehabilitation

Question:

Has anyone installed a tank from a 59-67 VW Bus in theirs?
Dimensions are only slightly smaller 11x9x35
Cheap and easy to get new. Morris tanks are hard to find here (and small).
Seems to match up the best to this one.

TIA-
BTW - great site you have here. Wish the US contingency were as Internet savvy. I help run the Renault Owners Club of North America so I know how important this is these days.

If you can make it fit - don't see any reason not to use it!

Hi and welcome to the forum.
Fuel tank swaps are common on the commercials (van/pickup) as there is room to put many different types of tank.
If I remember correctly, Escort cn be used here - however Euro escorts are not the same as American.

Thanks,

Interesting that a vintage VW Bus parts company here in CA thought that my tank came out of a late model 70's fuel injected bug.
Turns out that although the guy I bought my Morris from thought it might have been from a 68-75 Bus, since he has used these in his Morris trucks.
In any event, waiting for this tank to show up (locally).
As a vintage Renault enthusiast (I own a 67 Caravelle), I have always lamented that Renault never made the 4CV as a truck.
Morris apparently had the market! :-)
Just parked at my mechanic's shop, 3 people have already come up to ask if it were for sale.
As a little background for you overseas (and east coast US) folks, the area my mechanic's garage is in is predominately hispanic. Lowered VW bugs are part of the local car culture. Not to mention the real lowriders made from the early 60s Ford Galaxies, etc.' 40s and 50s US trucks play heavily into this.
Imagine the young local VW/lowrider car enthusiast when he spies a cool miniature truck like this!
