Post by dalebrignall »

dad and i took our saabs to be serviced today. dad drove like a man demented,i drove at a steady 55mph.dad got there 5 mins before me.the journey is 30 miles.according to the computer on the car i was getting 49mpg out of the old girl.not bad for a 2litre engine thats 11 years old.its a different story when driving around town.

My 2 litre Cavalier (1990) has never done less than 40mpg since I have owned it (12 years), the best I have ever achieved was a run down from Newcastle when I tried not to exceed 70 and I got 52 mpg - not bad for an eighteen year old! I think the high ratio 5th gear has a lot to do with it as at 75 the engines only doing 2500 rpm. My Morris on the last fill was doing 38 mpg admittedley with 4 star.

I've now got the Passat up to 48mpg (2.0 petrol, 15 years old, 120K miles). But yet to try it without getting stuck in traffic for at least 1/4 journey time.
Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.

I've yet to test the 11-year-old Civic - I think I'll have to do that soon. Should be reasonable, older cars seem rather good compared to some modern ones, another reason to keep to the older vehicles, methinks. Moggies have exceptional fuel economy considering their age.
