Water pumps

Post by youngun »

Just been looking around, there seems to be a number of different water pumps about, for the 948 1098 and 803 models of engine. Are these all interchangable?

thanks,

I think not the 803 - it's slightly different. 948 and 1098/1275 pumps are all much of a muchness - although later pumps have a thicker impeller which can foul on the block when installed - either grind a bit off the pump or carefully relieve the block. Be wary of pumps for later Minis - which don't have a lug for the alternator !

And remember there are pumps with and without bypass hoses.

Good excuse to get rid of the dreadful bypass hose!

Bypass fitment aside, there are two main types of similar (if not identical) outward design. The difference is in the pump impeller. One stands proud of the pump casing about 6mm more than the other and is not compatible with all the 948 engines. Either are fine for the 1098 or 1275 engine.
Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.

But it is a better pump - hence the suggestion to carefully relieve the block, or take a little bit (just an edge really) off the pump.
