This looks like a suppressor capacitor which someone has added to the car to reduce interference when a radio is fitted. The normal place to fit it would be between earth and the connection on the dynamo which goes to the brushes.

In practice it would be bolted onto the same place as the coil bracket on the dynamo which can be seen on the left of your second picture and the flying lead would go to the larger of the two terminals at the end of the dynamo.

However your engine should run perfectly well without it.

But your radio will sound like a foodmixer full of broken glass.
Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.

More normally fitted to the ignition circuit rather than the dynamo. But don't worry about it for now.

On the subject of supressors, any idea where I can get one cheaply and easily. I need a radio in the trav. I will go nuts without one...

You probably won't need them unless you have copper core HT leads with no suppressors attached. The only interfierence I've had on any mog was on a car with a failing coil.
