differential

Post by sidsmith »

:-? :-? I have decided to change the oil in the diff' and inspect the the half shaft seals at the brake shoe end. There is what looks like an allen key plug to drain the oil on the underside of the diff' casing, what size I don't know, and on the top shoulder of the casing is a slotted screw bolt which I image is the filler plug although according to the parts book it's described as a breather , therefore am I right in thinking I top the oil /fill after taking the breather out and if so how do I check the level, as if i fill to the breather level it means that the whole diff' is floating in oil is that right ?
my car is a '56 splitscreen

I found that a 1/2 socket set will fit the drain plug nicely. Filling it up though is different to mine. I remember someone on here saying it was a bit more difficult as there isnt a filler plug so cant help you on that bit!

I think (looking at the diagrams) you need to use a syringe with the breather unscrewed.

Im sure it will only be a few mins before someone does know :D

iirc the filler is on the diff rather than the case. The real problems start when you have a late dif on an early case!

The whole diff must NOT be filled up with oil. Use the filling plug - and fill to that level only.

If you are unlucky enough to have the wrong combination of axle casing and diff carrier then you could indeed have no filler hole( later axles have the combined filler/level plug half way up the rearmost face of the rear axle). If you are without any filler hole then, yes, you could remove the plastic breather assembly and inject EP 90 that way BUT
you must measure the correct amount out first.
