You could change the head as has been mentioned which will produce more power. The head change is usually the next thing on the list for 'bolt on' power mods.
Really you need to ask yourself what end result you want then plan what you need to get it. Otherwise you might end up spending a lot upgrading a 1098 when a 1275 would produce the same power and be a cheaper option.

Sorry you're absolutely right. I meant a HIF38. I knew I'd do that eventually-getting the name wrong-it's too easy to think HIF44 is the same size as HS4.Dont use the HIF44 on a 1098

A stainless system is available from most Moggy paryts suppliers. It's the standard bore system I'm talking about. And try to get a two piece unit - single piece systems are a pig to fit.
Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.

So is the stainless exhaust system less restrictive that the standard one?
And how can i tell which type is already fitted to my car?
What i'd essentially like to see is more torque, and power at the low rev ranges.
I find pulling away in first gear is good, but when changing to second its a little sluggish until the revs pickup. otherwise its pretty good, and the throtle response is excellent.
My budget for this is around £100, £30-40 for the head, £15-20 for the carb & alloy inlet, exhaust maybe, and finally a rolling road session.
