Wild quote
My insurance quote has doubled since last year (£78 - £150). the differences being attributable to stowage in a carport rather than a garage and a 1275 engine (better brakes though)
In your experience, is that fair?

Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.

I find that insurance companies tend to 'go with what they know'. Some will give you brilliant quotes for standard cars, and give high quotes for anything that's outside their expectations, while others will give wonderful quotes for modified cars, but simply aren't competitive for standard models.
If you've made a change to the car, it's probably time to change your insurance.
As for the carport - it has no door, no lock, so is possibly visible from the road, therefore a higher risk of being stolen - easier to see and easier to take. Wouldn't have thought it would have doubled the premium, though.

But as I said the brakes are listed as upgraded. Some companies see an engine upgrade without a matching brakes upgrade as a higher risk
True, but I didn't have the oportunity to mention there is a modern immobilised car blocking it's exit.As for the carport - it has no door, no lock, so is possibly visible from the road

Errr Pete... my car is insured for £180 fully comp with all my mods declared as a first car. Its also insured as being on the drive! I suggest you make a few phone calls!
I managed to insure the car for £78 fully comp (before my mods, but still 1275 with marina running gear etc) insured parked on the road in Ealing! That was as a 2nd car and only 1500 miles a year

If Insurance goes up like that, its always worth shopping around! If you are over 30 years old and have clean driving record- give RH a go for a quote.
Cheers John - all comments IMHO

Probably not. Who told you life was going to be fair?is that fair?
There are some good tips at:
http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/insurance/
Another is, go to your current insurers web site and get a quote but misspell your surname by one letter and prepare to be amazed how much less the quote is
Then phone them up and ask why you can't have insurance for this price quoting the reference number from the site if necessary.
Insurance companies and brokers don't play fair they rely on our laziness and hope we will just renew without question.
I'm sure your premium would have gone up even if nothing had changed.

That's true - all my insurances have gone up this year - the Minor by about 8%.
I tried RH, however, and they wanted documented proof of value which, when added to the cost of the premium (which I must admit was rather reasonable) made them only slightly cheaper than my current insurers. So I stayed where I was.

Just ask an officer of your local branch to value the car- Keith the chairman of East Kent branch often does valuations for local owners- types a letter, signs it and thats it!Gareth wrote:-snip-
