Ignition light staying on

Post by RobJ »

Hi all,
My ignition light has started to stay on. I read that this may be dyno problems. I don't have many tools to hand but are there any checks I can make to narrow down the problem?
If I continue to drive my Traveller like this will the battery eventually go flat?
Any advice appreciated,
Thanks
Rob

If you have one, then a volt meter/multi meter. check the volts across the battery. Should be 13+ volts. Start car and check again, rev the engine. Should increase the volts.
Yes if you keep running with the light on, you will discharge the battrey and the car will stop (probabley right where you don't want it to)

Dynamo or regulator or short in the bulb holder wiring behind the speedo, the last one is quite common.

Or maybe it's just a slack fan belt - check the easy option first! If the belt is ok then it's highly likely to be needing a new set of brushes in the dynamo. These are cheap - and easy to fit.

Ah -well that's almost certainly the answer. If you tighten it - get a new one asap - because tightened belt often snaps soon after.

Hi Rob it might be worth while joing the Essex branch as they are a very keen lot with loads of knowledge and possible mechanical help if needed.
Cheers
