Refitting door frames

Post by moggiesgalore »

Hello all,

Nearly there with my '59 convertible (wedding on 3rd May - eeek!). Have now got one wing, bonnet, window frames, one kick plate/finisher and interior left to refit.

When removing the window frames from the doors last year they proved fiddly to get out and I seemed to have to remove several of the c/s screws joining the parts of the frame together.

Am I right in thinking that if I refit them with the glass removed from the door that this will make it much easier? I'm sure i've seen this somewhere... Hopefully this would allow me to fit the complete frame (minus quarterlight) and not damage the new paint.

Any thoughts welcome. :)

How would you get the glass in with the frame in place?

What I found is that you have to remove the two sealing strips in the opening at the top of the door bottom, and remove the bracket that prevents the glass going too far down, then you can lower the glass right down into the door bottom. This allows more room to manoeuvre the top frame in. It is possible to do it without dismantling the door top.

If it doesn't work, you're not hitting it with a big enough hammer.
