I see both Bull motif and ESM offer an exchange service for dynamos and starter motors.
Has anyone had experience of either company, prices etc? I notice that Bull motif will not take the earlier style starter motor (the one with a removable metal band covering the commutator)why is this and is this the same for ESM as well? As this is the motor i have, should i replace it with a later one?
My dynamo is the earlier C39 one as well.

I think they work, they're just tatty and the commutators are worn. Id prefer to have a recon pair instead of relying on 50 year old wiring........plus the recon ones come repainted which is nice!

I would keep your starter - the early ones are better in my humble experience, you could stick a set of brushes in it and if the bendix is looking poor- fit a new one. Dynamo - again a new set of brushes and a good clean of the commutator will work wonders. If you have the facilities you can of course skim the comm in a lathe, and then tediously undercut each segment insulator slightly (dynamo only - NOT starter). Or of course - just fit an alternator!

If you fit an alternator, don't forget your AA card - your dynamo may have lasted 50 years, but some Alternators struggle to go 50 days.
I have exchanged Dynamos in the past - You need to remove the pulley but otherwise it is hassle free.

Ive had a good look at the dynamo, which is properly knackered......commutator is shot, and the bronze bearings are totally worn. So its an exchange for the Dynamo at least, the starter bearings seem pretty knacked too. Are they Porous bronze bearings in the starter as well?

Yes they are porous sintered bronze bearings. Try Halfords - they may be able to get exchange units. But also just try Yellow Pages for local reconditioner. Honestly - starter will work for years and years ! The bearings are never the problem. Also look for local Lucas depot - http://www.lucaselectrical.co.uk/
