I am trying to build up an axle (to fit tomorrow fingers crossed!) and i just have a kit of bits to work with and nothing to compare against. What i need to know is which brake back plate goes on which side of the axle?
One is marked RH and the other LH at the end of the part numbers but which is for which side? Although they are different, they will fit on either side of the axle casing without any difference in the mounting holes!
Hole for the brake cylinder at the front on the drivers side - pretty sure its also on teh front on passenger side too - cant check that but for sure its drivers side to front.
Yeah thinking about it passenger side slot to front too as the brake pipe follows the front of the axle from the T.
Thanks for your reply. I know that the cylinder goes at the front of the axle, but i need to know which side the backplates fit on.
Which side of the car is classed as the righthand side according to BMC when they made them?!
it shows a LH & RH - used but good etc
looking at them seperately it seems to suggest that the RH is the drivers side & the LH is the passenger side - assuming they have it correct in that the triangular pressing is above the cylinder slot.
Soon whip off a wheel and have a look for you in the morning if your stuck, was sure i had a pic but darned if i can find it.
Interesting problem - is there much difference between the backplates ? Is the hole for the cylinder offset in any way ? Otherwise I go along with the idea that RH must mean driver side in UK !
Thanks for all of your replies. I have gone with right on the drivers side and just hope thats correct or it will all be apart again! The only difference visually is the pointed/triangular bit where the cylinder is, but i haven't measured them up.
I was going on the theory that if they are factory marked as left and right then there must be a reason!
Orkney,
Thanks for the offer, but i will have the car to look at tomorrow and can compare it myself then. Its a 50/50 chance!
ALL catalogue descriptions and workshop descriptions as to which side an item is fitted should be given from the point of view of a person sitting in the drivers seat looking forward.
