1959 2 Door Drivers lock Problem

Post by crossword »

Help please ! I have been unable to lock my driver's door for 2 weeks . The key is willing to turn a quarter turn ccw but no further , I have also noticed that the handle is sticking out further than it should . Now it is removed & I can see that the countersunk fixing screw next to the handle can stop it going fully home if screwed in tight . Indeed that was the first screw I removed & whilst doing so noticed the handle returning to its normal position . At this point the lock would work normally .
1, Should this screw be shorter than the other two above & below the brass piece which engages with the striker plate ?
2, Is the lock broken in some way to cause this ?

Thanks Andy.

Yes Kevin , my concerns about screw length were the clue . I still do not know if all three screws should be the same length or not but comparison with the nearside locK showed a much shorter screw in the location mentioned . The car has, with one of its previous owners, had some spraying carried out with removal of doors & door furniture. I think it likely that the correct length screws were lost or jumbled up between the two sides .
To fix it , I cut off about 3mm off the length .
Also I think that I caused the problem several months ago tightening a loose screw , but not checking operation of the lock , The car has sat unlocked in the locked garage since then, only noticed it not working on a very recent trip .
