nuts and bolts

Post by andrewwita »

does any one know if any one has made a list of nut and bolt ( spanner sizes) for referance - and save time trying to fit wrong spanners on to my minor traveller -

i.e 1/4w for most of the wing bolts

Not as far as I know, but it would be a great thing to have. If people want to PM me any, I'll put together a locked (to stop it turning into the usual free for all affair) 'sticky' thread on it. It'll give Harry Mango a chance to shine too :D

Basically it's mostly Whitworth sizes on the body and Across Flats on the engine and gearbox. Some new replacement parts come with metric nuts just to add to the confusion.

Quite, hence the offer to do a list. Seems to be an awful lot of answering things that haven't been asked tonight.

I've a feeling they're 3/16" W (assuming they haven't been replaced over the years with whatever non-standard bolt came to hand).

Would be a handy resouce indeed - never ceases to amaze me the amount of spanners you end up with out when doing even a relatively small job !

Well done Peetee - Several people have asked me to do this on many occasions but lack of time blah blah....

1 slight correction Hockey stick nuts are 2ba as are Top chrome, Bonnet Flash, Bull Badge & MM/S11 Boot Badge

Alex is correct - kick plates should be 3/16W

A few more from memory :-

Eye Bolt 1/2W
Rear Hub Nut 1,1/8W (although 1,7.8 AF is a very good fit & works)
Diff Pinion Nut 1,1/8AF
Tappet adj nut 7/16AF
Front Panel lower 3/16W
Front Panel top 1/4W
Bonnet & Boot Hinges 3/16W
Bumper Blade to Valance 1/4W

Everyone should remember though where Whitworth is mentioned this is only the Spanner size - if you are replacing the fixings these threads are BSF (British Standard Fine) which is 1 size larger than Whit. i.e. 5/16BSF thread uses a 1/4W spanner size.

I have a hard time understanding these different spanner sizes and "standards".

Looks like the AF spanners are marked according to the bolt head diameter, and the Whitworth spanners are listed under something else - thread diameter? Totally confusing.

I have a set with 7/16, 5/8, 9/16, 1/2, 3/4"" etc and they fit a lot of places on the Morris. These spanners are obviously not Whitworth, since they fit the nuts/bolts listed under AF.

But for all those critical bolts/nuts...the ones that need a bit of persuasion (force) and need to fit 100%, like the wing bolts, my set won´t work.

Occasionally, my metric set will do the job (like on the front suspension which wasn´t very rusty/tightened), but I refuse to attack a wing bolt with something that isn´t a dead fit.

So it seems I need a set of Whitworth spanners, too?

Since I am in Sweden, I have a hard time finding anything non-metric - nuts and bolts are hard, but finding tools is a real pig.

Any UK sources available, preferably with good prices and reasonable shipping? Anyone here who could sell me a used set in good shape?

Tnx for your time & any advice/pointers, as usual.

Cheers /Richard

Try sending HarryMango a PM, or search eBay.co.uk for "whitworth spanners". I find it useful to have both a combination spanner set and a socket set.

ESM or BM (and other suppliers no doubt) can send you the correct size nuts and bolts for all parts of the car, and ESM sell a set of Whitworth sockets on a rail.

or try here for a full high quality Whitworth tool kit http://www.whitworthspanners.com/produc ... cdc66ee183

The cheapest way to buy these tools is a boot fairs or autojumbles if you visit the UK and can get to one!
Cheers John - all comments IMHO
