The long punch would need to penetrate the diagonal reinforcement plate inside the box section.

Good point MT - just not too sure where the punch mark will appear - and how accessible it will be. Worth a try before hacking the inner wing!

I give up. Just above the toe board is the answer, bit it just won't work. Go check it on your own cars - there are holes in the underside of the cross member to peep/feel through.

Not quite sure what you mean by that, but I hope you're not proposing welding the damper to the cross-member. :o

If it doesn't work, you're not hitting it with a big enough hammer.

if the plate is 3/8" thick it may well be ok
It's 1/4'' so may be iffy.
Three good bolts and a lightly torqued fourth one sounds fine to me.
Couldn't live with that one, Roger!
Like your line of thought Moggyt, well all but the mig bit! Will be checking that one out.

Just a thought- have you tried the simple thing first- just run a 5/16bsf tap down the thread. This may do the trick, especially as its a thread in a plate. Run the tap through and see if you can tighten the damper bolts to the specified torque.

(I allways think "what would my neighbour do here"- after 40 years as an engineer I would allways listen to his advice).

Not tried that one cj, as the bolt is 5/16bsf and virtually pulls out I concluded that the threaded diameter was too large, thanks though. You mentioned specified torque, is there one?
