Traveller Window Channels.

Post by iandromiskin »

I'am just about close to being able to reinsert the window channels and windows on my Traveller, but can anyone help with advice on the correct order and method of sticking them back in ??? Anyone have any pictures, diagrams or good descriptions that I can follow ?

That was one of the most horrid jobs I did - it took my dad and I two long evenings to drill and screw them in place using over two hundred tiny screws. I tried doing it with pins first but it's impossible without one of those special pin holding tools. You need one person to hold the channel in the right place while the other fixes it down. I'm afraid I didn't document the order I fitted them in. Get more of the channel than you need - I thought I'd ordered about a foot extra but with wastage I ended up with the last section I fitted being made up of two short pieces, and no spare at all.

If it doesn't work, you're not hitting it with a big enough hammer.

Oh dear, your putting me off it now. :(

I was looking at the Morris Minor Centre Bath site for window channels. Do they come in lenghs that you cut to fit or are the cut to size ? I also thought that you had to use pins rather than small screws in case the windows caught or something. But it sounds like a lovely job anyway. I'll do a bit more studying and study my photos from when I took the windows out and see if I can come up with a plan. I've just finished bleaching the wood as best I can, so now I'll sand it down, treat it with wood preserver and get oiling.

I got mine from ESM but I would expect the Bath ones to be the same. The ones with chrome on for the bottom outside channel came as straight lengths that were slightly too long. The other type came as a long roll that needed cutting into sections. The easiest way to cut it seemed to be with heavy duty wire-cutters. You have to tighten the screws enough that the glass doesn't catch but not so much that they go right through the bottom of the channel - very finicky to get right. I think my old channels were original and they were held on with small screws.
