fuel leak misfire running rich info not request

This is not a request for help just wanting to get info on here so others might use it if they search post for words like above. I have had a week of problems hopefully now sorted

1. If carb is old/worn and engine running rough looks at front end of throttle spindle - might see whiff of vapour from there. Put finger over at idle. Improvement? Then there is a leak - draws in pure air i guess

2. Do not assume poor running is head gasket 'tween 2 & 3 - again jusy because Mrs tells you she thinks it is and pulling off a lead makes no difference to running. Make other checks first even if you are rushing to watch Rugby on box!

3. Do not assume condensor is ok beacuse you changed it at service a few weeks before. Swap for old/new one - you may get the little screw if first time for the first time!

4. Running rich and fuel pump clicks now and then when ignition on - leak somewhere.

5. Petrol coming apparently from carb end of pipe from the pump could be due to float valve problem - take off lid and have a look - bowl should not be overflowing. There is a little hole covered by a small cover below the brass inlet pipe. You should see this with fuel pipe removed. Fuel will flow out of this is float valve kaput. Thanks to chap at wigan MGM spares for this info.

6. Dont play Rugby for first time in years if you are likely to be bent over in engine bay for a while!

So - your problem was knackered float valve then I assume ? Common enough - best if suspected to pull the top off the carb and inspect fuel level at the jet. There is a much improved Grose valve sold by MOSS - these have a ball/seat instead of needle/seat - so they won't wear in future. Well, that's the theory anyway!
