URGENT:- MOT due on fri 7th Sept and I have just found out that the front near side brake piston has seezed and I want to replace the cylinders (on both wheels). Can anyone tell me what is the size of the two bolts that hold the cylinder to the back plate are please, I have miss placed (not to be confused with can't find them for all the junk in my garage as my wife would say ) the sockets that I would use to remove them and I need to get two sockets like yesterday

MOT was today 5th Sept and not the 7th like I thought, and the old girl passed first go again thats the ninth time in succession since Ive owned her and to the best of my knowledge every time for her previous owner as well, wish I could say the same for my modern day car (2003 Peugoet 206) its tyres where just below the legal limit
sure;y you should not let tyres fall into the illegal limit anyway, part of everyday maintenence
why is it so many cars fail on tyres at the mot, do we hope that the inspector will not notice
I think you are right BMC when we bought the car 3 years ago it had only done 27,000 miles and the dealer said that their policy was that all the time you have one of their cars they give you a life time free M.O.T's. I personally did not think that it need tyres as they did not mention it when I took it in for a service two months ago, and the car has only done 33,000 now. O bye the way aupickup I have been driving for over 40yrs and I think I know a bit about daily mtce (P.O.L.T= petrol, oil, lights, tyres) have driven anything from a 1/4 ton to a scamell for the TA
From memory 1/2" AF fitted on the large bolt nicely but I couldn't get anything to fit the small one in either AF, Metric or Whitworth. I had to carefully grind the flats of an 8mm socket with one of those 'wizard' tools with all the little grinding attachments.
As mentioned on the other thread about these - the Spanner/socket size is 1/8W but 11/32AF is a very close fit that works - available from your friendly Leicester correspondent
1/8W was way too slack on mine. Don't know if it was down to corrosion of the bolt head or different tolerences from socket manufacturers but it definately didn't fit.
There seem to be various sizes - I have come across at least two. Dunno what they were - but in each case a little socket from my £1.99 Poundstretcher set (~10 years ago and saved the day many a time - worth it's weight in gold!) worked a treat!
