Rear bumper removal

Post by TheLaird »

Hello there,

After finally getting the engine running consistantly I've started to fix up the body work but hit a snag.

For the life of me I can't figure out how to remove the rear bumper as the holding arms inside the rear dont fit through the hole in the body, so I was wondering if you have to take off the chrome and dismantle it piece by piece but thought I should ask just in case.

many thanks for your time

Dan

Don't really understand the problem. The whole rear bumper assembly together with the irons is held on by two nuts which fix it to the ends of the arms which MUST go through the body to be bolted to the chassis inside the boot. Is yours not arranged like that?

There are two big whitworth nuts under the rear valance that bolt the bumper irons to the thick metal bracket behind the bumper. Lots of plus gas and an open ended whit spanner!

Thanks for the replies,

There's a large bolt on the end of each arm but they are also attached by two more bolts which hold it to the inner wing but because of the shape of it it won't fit through the hole in the body, thats where I'm getting confused :)

You have to undo the nuts on the other side of the 1/4" thick bumper iron blade (under valance), then the bumper fixing removes from inside the boot.

It's the nuts on the ends of the bars you remove not the nuts at the front that are visible inside the boot. the bars can stay put assuming they are sound.
Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.

if you look on the following link there is a diagram of the bumper set up.

Maybe this will help you to see what is what.
Good luck
